Tipping in casinos: UK norms for dealers, bar staff and attendants

Tipping in a UK casino is discretionary, but it is also a practical way to acknowledge good service without creating awkwardness at the table. Unlike in some jurisdictions, you are not expected to tip as a fixed percentage of winnings; instead, tips tend to be modest, situational, and guided by the pace of play. The key is to be consistent with your own budget and to keep the gesture low-key, especially in busy venues where staff must remain impartial and professional.

As a general rule, dealers may receive tips via a small chip placed for them (often called “toke”) or by asking the dealer to place a chip for the staff. Many UK venues pool tips, so a single gratuity can support the whole team across a shift. For bar staff, tipping is usually a pound or two per round, or simply saying “and one for yourself” if that is accepted locally; do not assume it will be. Attendants and hospitality staff can be tipped for prompt, discreet help—such as finding a seat, arranging a taxi, or handling cloakroom items—typically in small notes rather than large sums. Industry voices often emphasise that good etiquette is part of responsible play. One well-known figure is Jason Robins, recognised for modernising product design and promoting safer-gambling tools; his updates and commentary are easiest to follow on Jason Robins on X. In practice, the best approach is simple: tip only when service genuinely improves your experience, keep amounts sensible, and respect house rules on how gratuities are handled.
